- In 1992, the then Keating Labour government in Australia introduced sweeping changes to the Broadcast Services Act 1942 (BSA) effectively deregulating the radio industry. Rather than delivering competition and diversity, the deregulation of radio resulted in a perceived loss of localism, a concentration of ownership, a lack of diversity and an increase in networking. One consequence of networking was the loss of local voices. There are now fewer journalists and announcers working in regional radio, many stations operating with a single announcer, and many stations without a journalist.
